Manchester United Eye £52m Swoop for Leverkusen Defender in Summer Rebuild

Manchester United are weighing up a summer move for Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Edmond Tapsoba as they look to strengthen their backline during the transfer window.

The Old Trafford outfit splashed over £200m on five new arrivals last summer, bringing in Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Benjamin Sesko, Senne Lammens and Diego Leon. Those signings failed to deliver immediate dividends, with Ruben Amorim's tenure ending in disappointment following a run of poor form.

Enter Michael Carrick. The interim manager has overseen a dramatic upturn in fortunes, collecting four wins and a draw from his opening five games in charge. United have climbed to fourth in the Premier League table, putting Champions League qualification firmly within reach.

That prospect of European football's premier competition could prove transformative for the club's spending power next season, and United are already plotting their summer strategy accordingly.

German outlet Fussballdaten reports that United view Tapsoba's "physical qualities as tailor-made for the intensity of the Premier League." The Burkina Faso international has also attracted attention from Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool and Real Madrid.

Leverkusen's position is clear. The Bundesliga side won't stand in the player's way if an acceptable offer arrives, with the club willing to negotiate at their release clause—believed to sit between €95-100 million—or their internal valuation of approximately €60 million.

The German club are already identifying potential successors, with Fussballdaten noting that whilst Champions League success might persuade Tapsoba to stay, an offer in the €55-60 million bracket would likely prove too tempting to refuse.

According to TheWeek, United are "open to splashing £200 million on new recruits in the summer of 2026," signalling serious intent in the market.

Speculation has mounted that United could allocate a significant portion of their budget to midfield reinforcements, with Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister mentioned in dispatches. Former United defender Paul Parker, however, has firmly dismissed such talk.

"My first thought is just no, no, no, no, NO. Not in a million years, and I haven't seen enough reasons why they would get Mac Allister," Parker told Pariurix. "The club needs a midfielder, maybe even two, but would he be one of those two? I think the answer would be no. It would be a big no, and I am 100% sure that he doesn't even want it to happen because of where he is playing. He has never been quoted saying he wants to play for Manchester United. No one would ever be that silly to ever say that.

"It is just not going to happen, and I just see it as a made up story. Someone made it up because it can generate some clicks. Even if he wanted to come, the club would have to say no. It would never work out, not in a million years."
