Man Utd Prepare £39m Swoop to Snatch Ederson from Atletico Madrid

Manchester United are gearing up for a summer spending spree in midfield, and they're not about to let a European heavyweight waltz away with a target without a fight.

The Red Devils have identified Ederson, the Atalanta midfielder, as a potential piece of their midfield jigsaw—and they're ready to throw £39m (€45m) at the problem to pinch him from under Atletico Madrid's nose. The Spanish outfit have already sorted personal terms with the player, pencilling in a deal until 2031 worth €4.5m annually, but they've hit a snag: Atalanta haven't budged on their asking price.

The Italian side are holding out for more than the €35m Atletico have tabled so far, valuing their man at around €50m. That's where United reckon they can make their move.

The scale of United's midfield overhaul this summer is no secret. With Casemiro heading for the exit and Manuel Ugarte potentially following him out the door, the club needs reinforcements. Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has indicated that United will "very soon decide" on their targets, with Ederson among several options on the shortlist.

Romano's recent assessment suggests Ederson could operate as a backup option, available in that €40-45m bracket, though United also harbour interest in Sandro Tonali. Carlos Baleba, another name that's been circling since summer 2025, remains in the conversation too.

The talent pool United are considering is hardly short of pedigree either. Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson, and Tonali represent the pricier end of the market, whilst Ederson offers a slightly more economical route into bolstering the engine room.

Arsenal have also been keeping tabs on Ederson, so United face competition beyond just Atletico. Wolves, meanwhile, are in the frame as another club in the mix for midfield upgrades this summer.

The race is on, and with Atletico having failed to seal the deal with Atalanta, United smell an opportunity.
