Ratcliffe Eyes Real Madrid Star Valverde to Reward Carrick, But Midfield Overhaul Plans Already Moving Forward

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is determined to show his appreciation for Michael Carrick's stellar contribution to Manchester United's first-team setup by launching an ambitious bid for Real Madrid's Federico Valverde.

The United hierarchy has identified midfield reinforcement as a priority heading into the summer window, having concentrated their efforts elsewhere during the previous transfer campaign. Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko all arrived at Old Trafford in recent months, but the club recognises the need to bolster the engine room.

Reports from Spain suggest Ratcliffe dispatched representatives to hold talks with Valverde's agents, with United making meaningful headway in discussions. Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea have also circled the Spanish midfielder, but the Red Devils have reportedly advanced furthest in their pursuit.

Yet the move has hit a stumbling block. Valverde, it appears, remains content at the Bernabéu. The 26-year-old and his family are settled in Madrid and harbour no immediate desire to depart. While he's acknowledged United's overtures and those from rival suitors, he's taking a patient approach. The midfielder is optimistic that Real Madrid's imminent managerial change—with Álvaro Arbeloa's replacement arriving—will see the club move in a fresh direction, and he's prepared to give that project his backing rather than seek pastures new.

Three Signings Already Lined Up

Undeterred by the Valverde setback, United have already earmarked their opening three summer acquisitions. Club Brugge's centre-back Joel Ordonez, West Ham's defensive midfielder Mateus Fernandes and Newcastle's left-back Lewis Hall are the chosen trio.

Ordonez represents United's primary target at centre-back, with the Belgian side's defender seemingly within reach. Fernandes is being groomed as Casemiro's long-term successor in the middle of the park, whilst Hall—identified as Jason Wilcox's preference—is viewed as the ideal candidate to revitalise United's left-hand flank.

The overhaul, which will demand substantial investment, is designed to address gaps across defence, midfield and the wider positions as United plot their assault on silverware.
