Manchester United Issues Statement on Inclusivity Following Ratcliffe's Immigration Comments

Manchester United have stepped in to address the fallout from co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe's ill-judged comments on immigration, making their position on inclusivity unmistakably clear through an extensive club statement.

Ratcliffe's remarks—in which he referenced the UK being "colonised by immigrants"—emerged from a Sky News interview where he also weighed into broader immigration policy discussions and voiced admiration for Reform party leader Nigel Farage. The 73-year-old businessman claimed the nation faces significant economic headwinds as welfare systems face mounting pressure from incoming migrants.

The backlash was swift and substantial, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer himself weighing in to describe the comments as "offensive and wrong". Ratcliffe subsequently offered what many viewed as a tepid response, stating: "I am sorry that my choice of language has offended some people in the UK and Europe and caused concern, but it is important to raise the issue of controlled and well-managed immigration that supports economic growth."

He added that his remarks were delivered while addressing questions about UK policy at the European Industry Summit in Antwerp, where the focus was supposedly on economic expansion, employment prospects, and manufacturing capacity.

United's response has been altogether more forceful. The club's statement emphasises their standing as an inclusive institution, pointing to their diverse playing squad, staff, and global fanbase as reflections of Manchester's multicultural character.

The club highlighted the All Red All Equal campaign, launched in 2016, which they say has become embedded throughout their operations. They also referenced their Premier League Advanced Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Standard accreditation.

Throughout the current season, the club has participated in various community initiatives spanning mental health awareness, LGBTQ+ inclusion, anti-racism campaigns, violence against women and girls prevention, and efforts to stamp out homophobic chanting. Additional activities have included supporting disabled supporters' gatherings and Jewish supporters' club celebrations.

The Manchester United Foundation's ongoing community work in the surrounding area was also highlighted as integral to the club's values and mission.
