Fletcher Handed Six-Match Ban After Admitting Homophobic Abuse Charge

Manchester United's young prospect Jack Fletcher has been suspended for six matches after admitting to homophobic abuse during a fixture last autumn.

The 18-year-old son of club legend Darren Fletcher accepted the FA charge relating to an EFL Trophy encounter against League One outfit Barnsley in October 2025, with his final suspension match taking place on Friday.

Fletcher, who made his Premier League bow in December's defeat to Aston Villa and subsequently appeared off the bench in three consecutive outings, has been absent from United's lineup for their last half-dozen matches. The youngster has also been sidelined from U21 action throughout the disciplinary process.

The FA confirmed in an official statement that Fletcher "admitted the charge" following the incident at Oakwell, where he opted for a paper hearing rather than a personal appearance. The governing body classified the breach as an "Aggravated Breach" under FA Rule E3.2, citing the reference to sexual orientation.

In the match itself, Fletcher notched the opening goal for United's U21 side before receiving his marching orders. Barnsley subsequently stormed back to claim a 5-2 victory.

According to reports, Fletcher directed a two-word slur at an opposing player during play. The incident was witnessed by referee Will Davis, who intervened in an attempt to calm the situation. It's understood Fletcher had been subjected to abuse from an older opponent throughout the contest regarding his family background, and the outburst came in response to this provocation.

Fletcher has since apologised for the language used, stating the remarks were made "in the heat of the moment" and asserting he held no homophobic intent. "I am truly sorry for the offensive word that I used," he said. "Despite the fact that I had no intention to use the term as a homophobic insult, I completely understand that such language is unacceptable and immediately apologised after the game. I want to be clear that this momentary lapse of character absolutely does not reflect my beliefs or values."

Manchester United has responded by emphasising its commitment to inclusion. A club statement read: "Manchester United has worked with Jack to strengthen his understanding of discriminatory language, and why it is harmful. In addition to his ongoing participation in regular Academy programmes on diversity and inclusion, Jack will also take part in educational training through the FA. Manchester United prides itself on being an inclusive and welcoming club."
