United's Managerial Hunt Takes Another Hit as Ancelotti Commits to Brazil

The outlook for Manchester United's managerial vacancy has darkened considerably after a pair of significant developments in quick succession ruled out two leading contenders.

Thomas Tuchel's position as a frontrunner for the Old Trafford job appeared to strengthen following an impressive start in his interim role under Michael Carrick—four victories and a draw from the opening five matches. That prospect evaporated when the FA confirmed Thursday that Tuchel has penned a contract extension through 2028, significantly extending his original agreement which was due to conclude following this summer's World Cup.

The setback proved merely the opening act. The Athletic reported Thursday evening that Carlo Ancelotti is poised to ink a fresh four-year deal with Brazil. Whilst final paperwork remains outstanding, the arrangement is now viewed as a foregone conclusion. Ancelotti's stock with the South American outfit has risen considerably following Brazil's recent World Cup qualifying campaign, which saw victories over Chile and Paraguay, a stalemate with Ecuador, and a loss to Bolivia—ultimately securing their place at the tournament.

The loss of Ancelotti as a possibility has particularly irked Gary Neville, who recently outlined his criteria for United's next permanent appointment. Writing in the Overlap newsletter, Neville identified four essential requirements: the ability to navigate the intense media scrutiny surrounding the club; proven capability to secure Champions League qualification and extract performances from star-laden squads; genuine understanding of Premier League football and English football culture; and alignment with United's footballing philosophy—namely attacking, positive football structured around a 4-4-1-1 or 4-2-3-1 formation.

Neville identified Ancelotti as the candidate who best satisfied this demanding checklist. He noted that whilst Ancelotti's arrival might necessitate a delayed start until late July should Brazil reach the World Cup final, his credentials were unmatched. Neville also reflected on a curious historical footnote: United had approached Ancelotti shortly before his 2013 retirement, yet the opportunity slipped away when he moved towards a first spell at Real Madrid.

Roberto De Zerbi remains in circulation as a potential option, with transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano suggesting the Italian manager is "guaranteed" to feature prominently in United's considerations. Yet with Ancelotti now seemingly committed to the Brazil job and Tuchel locked into his England contract, the club's options continue to narrow.
