Spurs Ready to Outbid United for West Ham's Fernandes as Red Devils Push Triple Midfield Overhaul

The race for West Ham's standout midfielder Matheus Fernandes is heating up, with Tottenham potentially prepared to outspend Manchester United for the 21-year-old's signature.

Fernandes emerged as one of the Premier League's brightest prospects during 2025/26, catching the eye despite West Ham's descent into the Championship. His performances have sparked a genuine tussle between two of England's biggest clubs, with the Hammers holding firm on their £85m valuation.

United have already secured Ederson Silva from Atalanta for approximately £38m and viewed Fernandes as a natural next step in their midfield reconstruction. Yet the asking price has created complications, prompting Spurs to circle menacingly. Fabrizio Romano confirmed that both clubs remain locked in active negotiations with West Ham and the player's representative, Jorge Mendes, with talks happening daily.

"The battle between Manchester United and Tottenham is still underway," Romano stated. "Both clubs are in constant contact with West Ham and the agent. The player is open to joining either club. It comes down to who can agree a fee—around £85 million plus—and the payment structure matters too."

Crucially, journalist Chris Wheeler has suggested that Tottenham could be ready to stretch further financially than their rivals, potentially tipping the scales in their favour.

Yet United's midfield ambitions extend well beyond Fernandes alone. Despite Manuel Ugarte's recent knee injury, sources indicate the club's blueprint remains unchanged. The Red Devils had already mapped out an aggressive recruitment strategy targeting three central midfielders this window, and Ugarte's absence has done nothing to dampen those plans. Internal discussions have confirmed the injury will not derail their broader midfield overhaul, with the club pressing ahead on multiple fronts.
