Real Madrid Circle Back for Yoro as Man Utd Prepare Exit Door

The Bernabeu appears to be calling again for Leny Yoro, with Real Madrid dusting off their interest in the Manchester United defender after a prior courtship ended in frustration two years ago.

When United swooped for the French centre-back from Lille in summer 2024 for £52m, Madrid blinked first, unable to match the Old Trafford outfit's financial muscle. But Yoro's heart may have belonged to Spain all along, and now the Spanish giants believe they've found an opening.

According to reports, Yoro already has a "verbal agreement" tucked away—not formally documented, but understood between the parties—that would permit his departure to Madrid within a two-year window. That window, conveniently, remains open.

The catch? United aren't advertising him as available. Yet they'll apparently listen if Madrid come calling with approximately €70m (£61m) in their back pocket—a tidy profit on their initial investment and a means to "balance the books" on a squad still being reconstructed.

The Carrick Effect

Yoro's circumstances at Old Trafford have shifted dramatically since Michael Carrick took temporary charge. Under Ruben Amorim, the 22-year-old juggled appearances across 56 games for the club. Under Carrick's watch? A solitary minute across three matches.

The interim boss has ditched the three-centre-back setup in favour of a traditional back four, with Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire forming a partnership that's kept clean sheets in victories over Manchester City, Arsenal, and Fulham. That tactical tweak has essentially frozen Yoro out of contention.

Add in the looming presence of Matthijs de Ligt when he regains fitness and the promising emergence of young defender Ayden Heaven, and Yoro faces a queue for minutes that grows longer by the week. A fresh start in Spain suddenly looks rather appealing.

Guidance from the Old Guard

Carrick has bolstered his coaching staff with defensive nous, recruiting ex-centre-backs Jonny Evans and Jonathan Woodgate to work with the young defenders. Their influence is already apparent, with Harry Maguire praising their contribution.

"Woodgate's been fantastic," Maguire reflected. "He brings energy and refreshing ideas. As a former centre-back himself, he's offering tips and will work extensively with the younger lads—Leny, Ayden, Tyler Fredricson."
