Manchester United Circle Back on Greenwood as €100m Summer Swoop Looms

Manchester United are readying themselves to make a significant move for Mason Greenwood, with reports from Spain suggesting the Red Devils are prepared to lodge a €100m (£86m) offer to bring the winger back to Old Trafford this summer.

Greenwood, now 24, departed United in July 2024 to join Marseille for €31.6m, though the Reds retained a 50 per cent sell-on clause as part of the arrangement. His move came roughly two years after he was suspended by the club in January 2022 following allegations involving a young woman. While he faced serious charges including attempted rape and assault, the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued the case in February 2023.

Since his switch to France, Greenwood has demonstrated impressive form. Last season he netted 21 goals and provided five assists across 34 Ligue Un appearances, and has maintained that trajectory this term with 21 goals and eight assists in 42 matches across all competitions for the southern outfit.

The prospect of reuniting with his former club appears to be gaining momentum. United's pursuit of attacking reinforcements to recapture their offensive prowess has made Greenwood an attractive proposition, particularly given his speed, unpredictability in front of goal, positional flexibility, and intimate knowledge of the club's infrastructure. PSG remain in the hunt, but the English giants have emerged as the stronger proposition in the race.

Such an outlay would represent one of the summer's marquee transactions, though for Marseille it would translate into remarkable value given their initial investment—though the financial complexities surrounding United's retained sell-on rights will factor into negotiations.

Not everyone at the French club has been convinced by Greenwood's commitment, however. Following an underwhelming display against Nantes in May, former Marseille striker Christophe Dugarry launched a scathing assessment of the winger's attitude and application, questioning his dedication to the project and suggesting he should depart.

Ex-Marseille full-back Eric Di Meco offered a more measured perspective, arguing that a departure would serve everyone's interests. Di Meco suggested that a player of Greenwood's calibre—and one attracting interest from elite European sides—would be better suited to a club competing at the highest level, and that a transfer would allow Marseille to recoup their substantial investment while providing the forward with the platform his talent demands.
