Tuchel and De Zerbi Set for Permanent Man Utd Consideration This Summer

Manchester United's search for a permanent manager is already underway, despite Michael Carrick's recent appointment as interim head coach through the end of the season.

The Red Devils made the decision to part ways with Ruben Amorim last week, bringing an end to a disappointing 14-month spell that saw the Portuguese boss preside over a disastrous run of form. United finished 15th in the Premier League and were beaten by Tottenham in the Europa League final, whilst winning just three of their final 11 fixtures under Amorim's watch.

Carrick, who takes over following Darren Fletcher's two-match caretaker spell, will oversee operations until summer. Fletcher, despite being offered a position on Carrick's coaching staff, has opted to return to an academy coaching role instead. The new interim boss is understandably keen to make an impression, though the club's hierarchy are already plotting their next long-term appointment.

According to Fabrizio Romano, two names are locked in as definite candidates when United formally begin their hunt: England manager Thomas Tuchel and Olympique Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi. Both remain highly regarded within the Old Trafford corridors despite their current commitments—Tuchel focused on World Cup qualification with England, whilst De Zerbi is delivering impressive results in Ligue 1.

"This will be a long process with more names involved, and nothing is expected to happen quickly," Romano explained, suggesting the club will cast a wide net before settling on their man for 2026-27.

Unai Emery, currently performing admirably at Aston Villa, has also attracted speculation regarding the role. Spanish football expert Guillem Balague believes Emery would be pleased by the Manchester United links, given his outstanding work at Villa Park. However, Balague suggested the structural chaos at Old Trafford might not suit the Spaniard, despite United's superior financial resources. Emery, he noted, appears committed to his current project at Villa.
