Iraola's Old Trafford Prospects Brighten as Athletic Move Falls Away

Andoni Iraola's stock at Manchester United appears to be rising after the Bournemouth boss moved to quash speculation linking him with a return to his boyhood club Athletic. The development comes as two seasoned observers threw their weight behind the idea of Iraola stepping into the Old Trafford hot seat.

United's managerial situation remains fluid following the January dismissal of Ruben Amorim and the subsequent appointment of Michael Carrick as interim boss. The former midfielder has overseen a remarkable turnaround in fortunes, steering the club to third place and positioning them well for Champions League qualification. The rejuvenation has been underpinned by impressive performances from the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Matheus Cunha, Kobbie Mainoo, Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens.

Carrick's credentials for the permanent role have strengthened considerably, though INEOS officials are keen to cast their net widely for elite-level talent should the market present compelling alternatives this summer.

Iraola ticks that box emphatically. His tenure at Bournemouth has been nothing short of transformative, yet he faced persistent whispers about potentially succeeding Ernesto Valverde at Athletic. Those rumours now appear firmly in the rear-view mirror, with Iraola telling the Evening Standard: "No, it doesn't have anything to do with me."

He elaborated: "Probably as a supporter because it is my club, but no, it doesn't affect the situation. I've said it a lot of times, I'm very happy here. I have a great relationship with the club, and it's true that we will have to take a decision according to this, but it's a situation I have had most of my years as manager. It is not new to me."

The comments came in the wake of reports that United brass conducted an "emergency manager meeting" on Friday to assess their options.

Bournemouth are expected to offer Iraola fresh terms—a two-year extension—in a bid to retain their prized asset. Whether the 43-year-old accepts remains uncertain, particularly with interest also emanating from Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace.

Following Friday's controversial 2-2 stalemate between Bournemouth and United, Sky Sports analysts weighed in on the prospect of Iraola making the switch. Jamie Redknapp was unequivocal in his assessment: "He is an elite manager, I think he is top, I love the way that Bournemouth play and he has been an absolute revelation. I think he could definitely do it. Bournemouth play with high energy and tempo that I think Manchester United would want if he was the one of the managers they looked at."

Andy Cole offered qualified support, remarking: "Yeah, why not? He's a good manager. But put it this way, he's not going to struggle for options. I think to get Bournemouth in the positions they find themselves in, playing really good football and bringing in good players, that is a big bonus. I have watched them quite a bit this season, they are a good team. Finishing mid-table again for such a small club is a testament to him."
