Nagelsmann Emerges as Carrick's Main Challenger for Manchester United Hot Seat

Michael Carrick faces genuine competition for the Manchester United job, with Germany's Julian Nagelsmann identified as his chief challenger for the post, according to transfer specialist Ben Jacobs.

The 43-year-old has also unlocked the best from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo, underscoring the tactical shortcomings that plagued Amorim's tenure. Club bosses are seriously contemplating handing Carrick the job permanently, though they're keen to conduct a thorough process examining other candidates who might become available this summer.

Nagelsmann, currently managing the German national side, fits the profile of an elite option United would consider. The Bayern Munich-trained coach holds a contract through 2028 but has indicated openness to a club role and has long harboured ambitions to work in the Premier League.

Pochettino's candidacy appears to have cooled considerably. The USMNT boss remains tied to a contract containing provisions preventing an immediate departure, with his deal effectively running into August. Should United want him ready for the new Premier League campaign, they would need to negotiate his release with US Soccer. For now, Nagelsmann and Carrick rank considerably higher on the hierarchy's list.

United have expressed "natural appreciation" for Carlo Ancelotti, though any move for the Brazil manager was never genuinely pursued. Thomas Tuchel, another figure the club admires, has essentially removed himself from consideration by extending his England contract, and even a catastrophic World Cup performance is unlikely to push him toward Old Trafford this summer.

Luis Enrique has been discussed as a possibility given his stated desire to manage in English football and his fluent English, but Paris Saint-Germain are preparing substantial contract improvements to retain him.
