United Lead Pack for Leipzig's 'Generational' Talent Ouedraogo as Real Madrid Circle

Manchester United have emerged as the leading English club in pursuit of RB Leipzig's midfield sensation Assan Ouedraogo, with Spanish reports indicating a burgeoning battle with Real Madrid for the teenager's signature.

The 19-year-old's pedigree runs deep. Coming through Schalke's academy ranks, Ouedraogo etched his name into the club's history books by becoming their youngest-ever player and youngest goalscorer—both achievements coming at just 17 years old. The scramble to recruit him intensified that summer, with Leipzig eventually winning the race and securing his services for €10million in 2024.

His maiden campaign at the Red Bull Arena proved frustrating, hampered by injury troubles. However, the first half of this season has provided glimpses of genuine quality before another setback in January. He is anticipated to return to action in the weeks ahead, and that anticipated comeback has set tongues wagging across Europe's elite.

Spanish outlets are tipping the teenager as a 'generational' prospect and a genuine 'Bundesliga gem', injury history notwithstanding. United view him as the missing piece to bolster their midfield with "power and attacking prowess," seeing a summer swoop as a "golden opportunity."

The competition, though, is fierce. Newcastle, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal are all keeping tabs on the situation. Yet the most serious threat appears to come from Madrid, who have initiated contact with Ouedraogo's representatives. The Spanish giants see parallels with Jude Bellingham—a player capable of stepping forward to contribute goals while maintaining the physical and technical demands of elite football.

Leipzig are playing hardball, with valuations pitched between €55-65m (£48-56m) before they consider parting with their midfield "diamond."

This pursuit forms part of a broader United strategy to refresh midfield personnel, moving away from the Casemiro and Manuel Ugarte era. Elliot Anderson, Adam Wharton, Carlos Baleba and Sandro Tonali sit atop their wishlist, though Newcastle are manoeuvring to bring Anderson back and will mount fierce resistance over Tonali.
