Manchester United's search for a long-term successor to Ruben Amorim is gathering pace, with England manager Thomas Tuchel emerging as the leading candidate come summer, according to reports.

The Red Devils parted ways with Amorim on Monday morning, leaving the club without a permanent boss. Darren Fletcher has stepped up from his academy role to take temporary charge, though his tenure got off to a frustrating start with a 2-2 draw against Burnley on Wednesday.

The interim setup is expected to be a holding operation until the end of the season, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Michael Carrick mentioned as potential short-term options. The real business, however, will take place when United seek a permanent manager to steady the ship.

Tuchel, currently overseeing the England national team, stands out as the frontrunner in United's thinking. Though he previously turned down the opportunity before taking the international job, there's a sense he could be persuaded this time around. His tenure with England is likely to conclude following this summer's World Cup, creating the perfect window for a move.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has also been strongly linked with the position and was initially considered the top candidate. However, Glasner has made clear what it would take to lure him to Old Trafford. Transfer backing and the resources to reshape the squad in his image are non-negotiable conditions. As one insider put it, Glasner isn't the type to take on a fresh challenge without the proper tools at his disposal.

Luis Enrique, Mauricio Pochettino and Andoni Iraola have all been mentioned in dispatches, though neither has gained quite the momentum of Tuchel or Glasner.

The bigger question hanging over proceedings concerns the backroom setup. Tuchel's willingness to work alongside Jason Wilcox, Omar Berrada and Christopher Vivell remains uncertain—particularly given the apparent friction between Amorim and the club's hierarchy in recent weeks.
