Carrick's Perfect Start: Neville Hails Fernandes and Mbeumo as United Stun City

Michael Carrick's first match in charge of Manchester United could hardly have gone better. The interim boss watched his side dismantle Manchester City 2-0 on Saturday in a Derby performance that left the defending champions looking rattled from start to finish.

The victory came just days after United sacked Ruben Amorim, with Darren Fletcher steering the ship through fixtures against Burnley and Brighton before Carrick's appointment through the remainder of the season. The turnaround was swift, and the improvement was unmistakable.

Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu got the goals, though it could easily have been more one-sided. Gianluigi Donnarumma kept City competitive with a string of outstanding saves, but United's attacking play was simply too slick for their neighbours to handle.

Gary Neville, working commentary for Sky Sports, was effusive in his praise for two Red Devils in particular. "Bruno Fernandes and Bryan Mbeumo have both been outstanding," he observed after an hour had elapsed. "They haven't quite connected perfectly, but now they do. It is absolutely electric in this ground."

The former United skipper was struck by how comprehensively Carrick's side had seized control of proceedings. "I expected a battle. Yes, of course. But I don't think Man City were expecting United to be as organised and devastating in the combinations in the attack," he noted.

What was most striking to Neville was the sheer shock on City's faces. "Man City cannot believe it," he remarked. "Massive figures, Donnarumma, Rodri, Haaland shaking their head and the biggest of all, Pep Guardiola – stunned. They have been run ragged. Man Utd have punched and punched on the attack constantly."

Three days to implement a new system, and United had managed something resembling a masterclass. "Michael Carrick is in heaven," Neville quipped.

When reflecting on the full ninety minutes, Neville struck a note of cautious optimism. "What a performance, what an atmosphere, and what a day," he said. "The goals help, the result helps, but my goodness was that performance needed. Michael Carrick has played in great United teams, he knows what it looks like. To put that into a team in three days – this is not a time to get carried away because United have had so many false starts. But it is massively encouraging to say the least."

He also offered a broader observation on the title race: "For Arsenal, that Premier League title is there for you to go and grab."
