Neville Backs Nmecha as Smarter Alternative to Fernandes for United's Midfield Overhaul

Manchester United's midfield recruitment drive has taken an interesting turn, with Gary Neville suggesting the club might be chasing the wrong targets in their quest for summer reinforcements.
The Red Devils have already wrapped up a deal for Atlanta's Ederson this window and are hunting at least one more midfielder before the deadline. However, their initial priority—Elliot Anderson—looks set to slip away to Manchester City instead, forcing United to recalibrate their plans.
Mateus Fernandes has emerged as the next name on their shopping list, with reports suggesting the West Ham midfielder has already accepted personal terms and a full transfer agreement is within touching distance. Yet Neville, speaking on ITV Sport, believes United should look elsewhere.
The former United defender has his eye on Felix Nmecha, the Borussia Dortmund schemer who has been turning heads at the World Cup for Germany. "The more he plays like he did the other night the more expensive he'll get," Neville warned, before highlighting the financial arithmetic: "We hear Manchester United are being quoted £100 million for the West Ham boy Fernandes, so they're going to have to be looking around this tournament and parts of Europe."
Neville was effusive in his praise for Nmecha's recent displays. "He looked outstanding the other night, it looked like he had absolutely everything," the pundit observed, pointing to the midfielder's box-breaking ability and his willingness to venture into the opposition penalty area. "He can play as a No.8 or No.10, we can see he can finish, you can see why teams are interested in him. He's got everything."
Duncan Ferguson, the former Everton striker, echoed Neville's enthusiasm, identifying a string of qualities that make Nmecha an attractive prospect. "He's a very good player, a young player, he's got a very good right foot, he's athletic, he can get around the pitch," Ferguson noted. "It looks like he can get in the box, he can defend, he's a good size, you can see why people are after him."
The competition for Fernandes' signature is intensifying, with Tottenham also circling. Reports suggest the Spurs are edging towards an agreement on personal terms with the West Ham midfielder, potentially adding another wrinkle to United's midfield puzzle.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are reportedly making moves on the attacking front, with speculation that Mikel Arteta is preparing a £77 million push for a top target, potentially complicating matters further for United's summer business.
