Neville's Summer Blueprint: Four Managers Who Tick All the Boxes for United

Gary Neville has laid out a clear roadmap for Manchester United's managerial search, naming four leading contenders to take charge permanently once Michael Carrick's interim spell concludes at season's end.

Carrick stepped in following Ruben Amorim's departure, with the Portuguese boss's struggles on the pitch and strained relationship with the United hierarchy making his position untenable. The club's hierarchy opted for a caretaker arrangement rather than rush into a permanent appointment, banking on stronger candidate availability once summer arrives and contracts expire across Europe.

However, Neville has issued a stern warning: Carrick's impressive form cannot be allowed to blur the club's judgment. Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, the United legend stressed that sentiment must not override strategic thinking.

"I hope Michael does really well," Neville said. "We could be sat here at the end of the season with the fans up, with the team fifth in the table and back in the Champions League spots, and we could all be getting swayed with it. But there cannot be any consideration that Michael takes the job beyond the end of this season, for the sake of Michael and the club, even if he wins every single game."

The former defender has identified six essential qualities any permanent successor must possess: the ability to manage media scrutiny, restore dressing-room discipline, handle the ownership structure, deliver an entertaining brand of football, boast Champions League pedigree, and possess big-match experience.

Three names immediately stand out as ideal fits. Thomas Tuchel, Carlo Ancelotti, and Mauricio Pochettino could all become available after the World Cup, according to Neville's assessment. Eddie Howe represents a fourth option, having already proven himself with trophy wins, top-four finishes, and experience managing a major club at Newcastle.

"Manchester United have tried everything when it comes to appointing a manager, absolutely everything," Neville explained. "They just have to try to remove risks now."

The key distinction lies in managerial experience and profile. Tuchel and Ancelotti bring gravitas and winning pedigree that could help United attract elite talent—a crucial consideration given the club's current standing.

"To make United an attractive club for players, Tuchel and Ancelotti bring a seriousness to matters," Neville continued. "If you appoint a younger manager, United will miss out on players. United are going to miss out on a lot of players anyway, but someone like Ancelotti would encourage players to come. They need that right now, because I'm not sure players are queuing up to join unless there is someone to believe in."
