Manchester United Eye Villa's Morgan Rogers as Summer Priority; Mateta Discussions Underway

Manchester United have stepped up their pursuit of Aston Villa winger Morgan Rogers, positioning the England international as their flagship target for the summer transfer window. The 12-goal involvement man has emerged as a standout performer across the Premier League this season, featuring in 25 matches for Unai Emery's side.

United's recruitment plans have already taken shape following last summer's significant overhaul. The club injected approximately £230m into their squad, bringing in Senne Lammens, Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo whilst simultaneously moving on numerous fringe players. These additions have bolstered Michael Carrick's squad sufficiently to keep Champions League qualification within reach.

However, midfield reinforcement remains a priority, with the club targeting at least two new additions in that area come summer. An attacking midfielder capable of challenging for starts would address another gap, with Rogers fitting the bill perfectly.

The Villa star's recent contract extension through 2031 has considerably strengthened his club's negotiating position. United would need to table a substantial offer—reports suggest around €100 million (£86m) in cash—to prise him away from Birmingham. The Old Trafford hierarchy will need to demonstrate serious financial intent if they hope to convince a board showing no inclination to sell.

Elsewhere, United have also internally explored the possibility of recruiting another centre-forward option. Jean-Philippe Mateta has featured in conversations, with the Crystal Palace man having seen an attempted deadline day move to AC Milan fall through. Journalist Pete O'Rourke told Football Insider: "Yeah, I think he was on Man United's list last summer and I'm told there was talk of something happening last month as well. Whether United have moved on now, that remains to be seen. I don't think it's a top priority for United anymore to bring in a new striker."

O'Rourke suggested that Mateta's injury issues and age profile may have dimmed United's enthusiasm, though other clubs are likely to circle during the summer window when the 31-year-old enters the final year of his Palace contract.
