Schlotterbeck Snubs United with Dortmund Contract Extension

Manchester United's summer shopping list has taken another hit, with a key defensive target putting pen to paper elsewhere and shelving any Old Trafford move—at least for now.

The Red Devils have been quietly tracking Borussia Dortmund's Nico Schlotterbeck as a potential left-sided reinforcement, with transfer specialist Florian Plettenberg confirming United's interest back in April. The 26-year-old centre-back would have represented genuine value at the mooted €30m-€35m (£26-31m) asking price, a bargain fee for a player named in three of the last four Bundesliga teams of the season.

The catch? Schlotterbeck's existing deal was set to expire in summer 2027, which explained the relatively modest valuation. That window of opportunity has now slammed shut.

Dortmund moved decisively during the recent international break to tie down their prized asset, announcing on Friday that Schlotterbeck has committed to fresh terms through 2031. According to transfer authority Fabrizio Romano, the improved contract elevates the German international to among the club's highest earners.

The German defender had attracted significant transfer attention from across Europe, with Premier League clubs among those circling. Yet Dortmund's swift action has ended any immediate prospect of a departure.

However, all is not necessarily lost for United's future pursuit. Kicker reports that Schlotterbeck's new agreement contains a release clause estimated at €50m-€60m, available only to select elite European clubs—typically those with established Champions League credentials. United qualify on both counts, assuming they maintain their European standing.

The caveat: any such clause is almost certainly dormant this summer. Activating it immediately would render the contract extension largely pointless, suggesting any realistic opportunity for United would come in subsequent transfer windows rather than the imminent one.
