United Set Sights on Tonali and Ederson Midfield Overhaul

Manchester United have zeroed in on their midfield targets for the summer window, with sources indicating the club is determined to land both Sandro Tonali and Ederson in what would represent a significant investment in their engine room.

The pair, valued at approximately £139m combined, sit atop United's shopping list as the Red Devils plot a midfield rebuild ahead of next season. With both Manuel Ugarte and Casemiro expected to depart Old Trafford, the club recognises the need to bring in at least two new midfielders to maintain their competitive edge.

Under Michael Carrick, United have emerged as arguably the Premier League's standout performers this term, though their reduced fixture list has offered something of a helping hand. Next season's juggling act between domestic and European commitments will demand greater depth and quality in the middle of the park.

The optimism surrounding a double deal centres on Newcastle's Tonali and Atalanta's Brazilian midfielder Ederson. Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has reported that United are buoyed about their chances of pulling off the double coup, with the club viewing both players as central to their midfield ambitions.

"Manchester United has set a goal for the summer transfer window: strengthening their midfield," Di Marzio explained. "The Red Devils want to bring Newcastle's Sandro Tonali and Atalanta's Ederson to Old Trafford, and there's confidence in a double deal. As we've already reported, Atletico Madrid are also interested in the Nerazzurri midfielder, currently trailing United, who are ahead for the Brazilian."

Regarding Ederson specifically, Fabrizio Romano indicated that fresh discussions between United and Atalanta are imminent, though he cautioned that the Brazilian represents just one of several midfield options being explored. Atalanta are reportedly seeking around €45m for their midfielder, with Ederson open to the prospect of joining the club.

Yet journalist Alfredo Pedullo suggested the decision has already been made at United's end. "Talks are postponed until the official appointment of the new sporting director at Atalanta," Pedullo noted. "But, as already hinted, United is keen and the technical choice has been made."

The club's return to Champions League football this season has evidently sharpened their recruitment focus, with midfield reinforcement emerging as the clear priority heading into the transfer market.
