McTominay Commits to Napoli Future as Man Utd Dismiss £70m Return Talk

Scott McTominay has made clear his intention to build a lasting future at Napoli rather than entertain thoughts of a Manchester United homecoming, with the Red Devils simultaneously putting distance between themselves and speculation about a reunion deal.

Since departing Old Trafford for Serie A in summer 2024 for £25m, the Scotland midfielder has become an integral figure in Naples. His maiden campaign proved transformative—he netted 12 times and registered four assists in Serie A as Napoli claimed their fourth Scudetto in the club's history. This season, he's added ten goals and three assists across all competitions, form that inevitably sparked whispers of a return to England.

Reports had suggested United would be willing to splash out as much as £70m to bring McTominay back to Manchester. However, the club has now firmly distanced themselves from such claims, with sources insisting the midfielder has not featured in any internal discussions. United remain intent on recruiting midfield reinforcements this summer, but McTominay is not part of those plans.

The player himself has already addressed the speculation head-on. Speaking to Corriere dello Sport, McTominay declared himself "extremely happy" at Napoli and left little room for ambiguity about his priorities.

"My agent has not communicated with anyone regarding my future," he stated. "He only speaks with me and with the club. He hasn't said anything to the newspapers. I am extremely happy here and, as far as I am concerned, I am a Napoli player; it is all I think about. The future is very important, and I could see myself in Napoli for a long time."

Napoli, for their part, are keen to formalise his commitment before McTominay heads to North America for the World Cup finals this summer.

Gordon Strachan, the former United and Scotland midfielder, has weighed in with some food for thought. The veteran believes McTominay should resist any temptation to reverse course and return to Old Trafford, arguing instead that the system at Napoli suits his attributes far better than what United could offer.

"I don't think Scott McTominay should retrace his steps," Strachan explained. "I think he has to go into a system that allows him to be the midfield player who gets into the box without too many touches. That's what he's found at Napoli—a system that suits him to be free to just get in the box. Would Manchester United play like that? Because you've got Bruno Fernandes playing as a number 10 now."

Strachan highlighted the fundamental question of tactical fit. "Does he like going back there, McTominay, taking the ball from the back four and playing from there? Or does he prefer being 30 yards further up the pitch, waiting for crosses, doing edge-of-the-box stuff? It's got to be a system that suits him."

The former Scotland boss acknowledged McTominay's limitations but also his clear strengths. "He's not the trickiest player on the ball, he hasn't got the greatest vision in the world, but for somebody attacking the box and getting goals and strength in the middle of the park, then he's your man," Strachan added. "The good thing about it is that his performances allow him to have these choices. But I think it has to be the right system that suits him."

McTominay's rise at Napoli has indeed given him genuine options—a luxury that his performances at United rarely afforded. Whether United's system would suit him remains, in Strachan's view, an open question.
