Manchester United Move to Pole Position for Toulouse Defender Charlie Cresswell

Manchester United have thrust themselves into pole position to land Toulouse centre-back Charlie Cresswell this summer, with the defender reportedly enthusiastic about a move to Old Trafford.

The 23-year-old, who endured a frustrating spell at boyhood club Leeds United before finding his feet in Ligue 1, has become a regular fixture in Toulouse's backline since his 2024 arrival. His performances have not gone unnoticed, with the England U21 international earning a spot in the tournament team of the competition at last year's U21 Euros.

Several clubs have already tested Toulouse's resolve. Brighton and Wolfsburg both had bids rejected in January, whilst West Ham, Crystal Palace and Leeds themselves—perhaps ruing past decisions—are also monitoring the situation. Yet United's director of football Jason Wilcox has identified the 6ft 3in defender as a smart piece of business, viewing him as an attainable target within the club's broader overhaul.

The financial hurdle appears manageable, with Toulouse likely to demand somewhere in the region of €30m, or approximately £26m, though they may push for additional funds if negotiations allow.

Cresswell's journey has been one of redemption. His time at Leeds proved largely frustrating, with a loan stint at Millwall yielding more competitive action than he managed at Elland Road. The move to France has transformed his prospects, establishing him as a dependable defensive option and even chipping in with goals at the other end.

United's interest comes as the club prepares to compete in European football next season, necessitating genuine squad depth. Whilst Harry Maguire has recently signed a fresh contract, the veteran centre-half is hardly viewed as a long-term solution, making reinforcement at the back a priority.

The defender's willingness to make the switch adds another layer of encouragement to United's pursuit. With Michael Carrick's side now firmly positioned as the frontrunners, a summer deal appears increasingly plausible.
