Greenwood's Roma Switch Triggers £20m Windfall for United as Amorim's Milan Move Provides Further Boost

Manchester United are set for a significant financial lift this summer as Mason Greenwood's move to AS Roma edges closer to completion, with the club positioned to bank at least £20m courtesy of a sell-on clause included in his 2024 departure to Marseille.

The England forward has reached an agreement in principle with the Serie A outfit on a contract running until 2031 worth €5m per year plus bonuses, according to journalist Nicolo Schira. Roma are now preparing to enter formal negotiations with Marseille to secure the winger's services, with new manager Gasperini identified him as a priority target for the transfer window.

Greenwood's exit from Old Trafford came after he faced charges relating to attempted rape and assault, with the Crown Prosecution Service ultimately discontinuing proceedings following the withdrawal of key witnesses. The 22-year-old has since flourished in French football, amassing 48 goals and 17 assists across 81 appearances for Marseille over the past two seasons, though recent reports have suggested underlying tensions behind the scenes.

The anticipated windfall represents a welcome injection for United's coffers, particularly as the club prepares for Champions League football next season. That qualification itself has already bolstered their transfer budget, while further funds are expected to arrive through player departures, with Marcus Rashford and Manuel Ugarte among those potentially heading for the exit.

In another financial boost, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Ruben Amorim's move to AC Milan will deliver additional savings for the club. The Portuguese manager, sacked in January, was entitled to a substantial pay-off from United, but his appointment in Milan will reduce that obligation significantly.

"Man United will save more than nine million pounds for Ruben Amorim," Romano explained. "This was money destined to the Portuguese manager but now he's going to AC Milan and so that's extra money for Man United, very good news for Man United."

Amorim has penned a two-year deal with the Rossoneri until 2028, with an option to extend through 2029, marking his return to the dugout following his brief stint at Old Trafford.
