Liverpool and Tottenham Circle Greenwood as Man Utd Set to Bank £39m Windfall

Manchester United could be looking at a tidy summer payday with Premier League heavyweights Liverpool and Tottenham both sniffing around Mason Greenwood, according to reports emerging from Spain.

The 24-year-old forward, now plying his trade at Marseille, has caught the attention of the English elite after a compelling run of form in Ligue 1. Since his €31.6m switch from Old Trafford in July 2024—a deal that saw United retain a 50 per cent sell-on clause—Greenwood has been putting up impressive numbers.

Last season he managed 21 goals and five assists across 34 league appearances. This campaign, despite a disappointing showing in Sunday's 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain, he's added 17 goals and five assists in 29 outings across all competitions.

According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, both Liverpool and Tottenham have begun quietly exploring the possibility of making their moves in the summer window, with each outfit prepared to table an offer of €90m (£78m) to Marseille.

The Anfield project under Arne Slot views Greenwood as the perfect fit to sharpen their attacking edge, with Liverpool seeing potential in a partnership alongside Hugo Ekitike. Spurs, meanwhile, are on the hunt for a game-changer up front and reckon the Englishman's aggressive, vertical style would slot seamlessly into their attacking blueprint.

Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi has been full of praise for the winger's recent development. After scoring twice and laying on an assist in matches against Paris FC and Rennes, De Zerbi suggested Greenwood has blossomed into something special.

"We always need a Greenwood like the one we saw in the last two matches," the Italian manager said. "He's a world-class Greenwood because, in addition to what his mother and father taught him, he's becoming a complete player."

De Zerbi went on to highlight the personal growth alongside the footballing improvements. "He's truly become a player. I hope he continues like this," he explained. "I also see him as a little more human. He smiles sometimes, he talks a bit more. He's less withdrawn than before. And that's a positive thing."

Marseille teammate Timothy Weah has also been effusive in his assessment, claiming Greenwood is performing at "Ballon d'Or level" and "capable of incredible things."

Should either Liverpool or Tottenham succeed in landing Greenwood at the reported fee, United would bank £39m as the indirect beneficiary through their sell-on arrangement—a neat bit of business for a player they let slip away.
