Carrick Takes Lead in Man Utd Interim Race as Fletcher Eyes New Role; Club's Solskjaer Reservations Emerge

Manchester United's managerial search has taken a dramatic turn, with Michael Carrick now leading the race to take the interim reins—a significant shift from the consensus just days earlier that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was the frontrunner.

The upheaval comes a week after the club parted company with Ruben Amorim, whose 14-month tenure ended in acrimony. The Portuguese manager had publicly questioned the club's backing before his exit, whilst his tactical approach and results on the pitch drew withering criticism from all quarters.

Darren Fletcher assumed temporary charge following Amorim's departure, stepping up from his academy role. Yet the caretaker's two-game stint failed to halt the rot—a 2-2 stalemate at Burnley in the league was followed by a 2-1 home defeat to Brighton that knocked United out of the FA Cup. Those results have effectively ended Fletcher's chances of landing the job permanently for the remainder of the season.

According to The Athletic's Laurie Whitwell, Carrick has now emerged as the leading candidate after holding face-to-face discussions with club executives alongside Solskjaer. Fletcher is expected to transition into a coaching role supporting Carrick, with additional coaching staff likely to be recruited as well.

United's hierarchy—Director of Football Jason Wilcox and Chief Executive Omar Berrada—have spearheaded the process, though final approval rests with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Glazer family. An announcement is anticipated within 48 hours.

The reversal raises questions about why Solskjaer, seemingly the favourite throughout last week, has fallen away. A report from The Sun suggests certain figures within the club have grown irritated by the former manager's prominence since relocating to the north-west following his August departure from Besiktas. Sources indicate frustration that Solskjaer has "bunkered down" whilst maintaining a visible presence, particularly given his solitary managerial appointment in the past four years has been overseas.

The club's apparent reluctance to hand the job to the Old Trafford legend represents a curious turn given his stature within the institution—a sign perhaps that pragmatism is overriding sentiment as United attempts to salvage their season.
