Guardiola's Transfer Ambitions: City Poised to Block United's Midfield Raid with Double Swoop

Manchester City are threatening to derail Manchester United's summer recruitment plans by pursuing the same midfield targets, setting up a transfer tussle for two Bundesliga talents.

United's sights have been set on Borussia Dortmund's Felix Nmecha, a 25-year-old Germany international midfielder who departed Manchester City in summer 2021. The Old Trafford hierarchy, with INEOS backing, have identified the Dortmund star as a priority addition to bolster their engine room ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

Yet City have established themselves as the frontrunners in the race for Nmecha's signature. According to German journalist Christian Falk, Guardiola's outfit are already in active talks with the midfielder, with Dortmund keen to retain him on fresh terms. The Cityzens' interest represents a significant threat to United's ambitions.

The transfer battle extends further down the age groups, with both clubs eyeing Hertha Berlin's Kennet Eichhorn. The 16-year-old defensive midfielder has emerged as one of Germany's most promising talents and carries a variable release clause ranging from €12million to €20m.

Bayern Munich are also circling the young prospect, and remain the favourites given their domestic advantage. However, Falk's reporting confirms that City view Eichhorn as another potential addition, with Guardiola reportedly keen to develop the teenager into a future star.

United cannot formally register Eichhorn until he reaches 18, meaning any deal would require groundwork with both Hertha and the player's representatives now, with completion coming later. Arsenal and several other Premier League sides have registered their interest, alongside multiple Bundesliga clubs monitoring developments.

Falk's analysis suggests City face their own squad-building arithmetic. Should they land Nmecha—described as "really concrete" in terms of possibility—fitting Eichhorn into their plans becomes more complicated. Bayern's preference would be to keep Eichhorn within German football should he move, viewing a Bundesliga switch as preferable to losing him to England permanently.

Eichhorn shares representation with Jamal Musiala, keeping Bayern in constant dialogue with his advisors. The Bavarian giants have made their intentions clear: they're ready to move swiftly should the youngster seek a summer exit from Berlin.
