Man Utd table £70m bid to bring McTominay back from Napoli

Manchester United have submitted a fresh proposal to lure Scott McTominay back to Old Trafford from Napoli this summer, with the Italian side reportedly open to negotiating a departure for the Scotland midfielder.

The 29-year-old made the switch south in summer 2024 for £52m, and has since become a key player in Serie A. His maiden campaign in Naples proved spectacular—he helped Napoli clinch the Scudetto, an achievement that places him among elite company at a club that has won the Italian title just four times. Maradona himself sits in that exclusive club of champions.

McTominay's contribution to that title triumph was substantial, with 12 goals and four assists across his first season. This term, he continues to impress with ten goals and three assists across all competitions.

United's interest in reversing the transfer has been simmering since December, when discussions about a potential return were revived. Now, fresh reports suggest Napoli are genuinely willing to entertain offers as they look to strengthen their financial position. The Italian outfit view McTominay as one of their highest earners, making him a candidate for sale if the price justifies it.

The Manchester club's proposal—valued at approximately €80m (£70m)—is believed to appeal to Napoli's hierarchy, who see a sale as an opportunity to balance the books and reinvest elsewhere.

Teddy Sheringham, the former United striker, has weighed in on the prospect, insisting it would represent a significant misstep if the club allowed McTominay to return to the Premier League without securing him.

"I'm devastated to see Scott McTominay performing so well somewhere else. Manchester United could do with Scott McTominay right this minute," Sheringham told MrQ. "When he left Manchester United, I wasn't happy. Scott McTominay is one of those players who digs in when things aren't going quite so well and makes things happen.

"I think that's exactly what you need when you're struggling. To see him doing so well at Napoli just makes it even more of a bad move on Manchester United's part, but I am delighted for him on a personal level that he's doing so well in Italy.

"If he comes back to England, then there's no way Manchester United can miss out on him. He simply cannot come back to the Premier League without going to Manchester United. That would be a travesty. That cannot happen. If he's coming back to the Premier League, then he has to go to Old Trafford."
