Manchester United Circle Rafael Leao as Milan Accept Below-Market Bid

Manchester United have made their move for AC Milan's Rafael Leao, with Italian sources indicating the Serie A outfit are prepared to wave through a bid significantly lower than the winger's astronomical release clause.

The 26-year-old Portugal international has become one of Serie A's most consistent attacking threats since his €35m arrival from Lille in 2019. His credentials speak for themselves: three of the last four Serie A Team of the Year selections and the league's player of the season accolade in 2021/22, when his 11 goals and 10 assists fired Milan to their most recent title triumph.

Milan's previous attempts to protect their asset resulted in a release clause pitched at either €150m or €175m. Yet according to Calciomercato, the Rossoneri would entertain a significantly more modest €50-60m package for the Portuguese star.

That's the figure United are apparently working with as they hunt for a new left winger this summer, alongside their pursuit of two major central midfield signings. The Red Devils view Leao as their primary target in that position, and the financial mathematics appear to stack in their favour—both the proposed transfer fee and his current €7m annual salary at Milan are deemed comfortably within their reach.

The reason Milan's valuation has dropped so dramatically becomes clearer when considering contract status. Leao will have just two years remaining on his San Siro deal come summer, placing the Italian club in a weaker negotiating position should he prove reluctant to extend. A substantial sale while they retain some leverage makes pragmatic sense from their perspective.

"The Portuguese would not be considered untouchable when faced with offers between 50 and 60 million," Calciomercato stated, effectively confirming Milan's willingness to do business at that price point.

Leao's primary position remains left wing, though he has featured more centrally during the current campaign—which explains some outlets referring to him as a striker. At Old Trafford, he would likely operate in his traditional wide role.

Barcelona have also made enquiries regarding the 43-cap international, though without gaining traction. Saudi Arabia's interest has been consistently rebuffed by Leao himself, with the Premier League appearing to represent his preferred destination should an exit materialise.
