Manchester United Lead Bayern and Chelsea in Pursuit of Leipzig's £77m Defender Lukeba

Manchester United have made significant ground in the race for RB Leipzig's Castello Lukeba, holding direct talks with the centre-back's camp after he informed the German club of his desire to pursue a fresh opportunity.

The Old Trafford hierarchy's primary focus this summer remains midfield reinforcement. Having already secured Atalanta's Ederson for £35m, they continue to explore alternatives following the departures of Casemiro and the anticipated exit of Manuel Ugarte. They've abandoned their pursuit of Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson following Manchester City's rejected £120m approach for the English international, but remain attentive to Brighton's Carlos Baleba, West Ham's Mateus Fernandes, and Bournemouth's Alex Scott.

Lens' Mamadou Sangare is another target under consideration, though German sources now indicate United are equally intent on bolstering their defensive options. Lukeba has emerged as their principal defensive target for the window.

The 23-year-old arrived at Leipzig from Lyon in summer 2023 for £26m and has since established himself as a key figure. His current contract runs until 2029 and includes an exit clause valued between €80m (£69m) and €90m (£77m)—a figure that expires before the transfer window closes. Leipzig may entertain bids in the region of €60m (£52m), considerably below the clause's upper limit.

Barcelona were among the first to initiate contact with Lukeba's representatives, whilst Chelsea are preparing an ambitious package for the defender, who has featured prominently on their scouting radar for over two years. Bayern Munich and Manchester City remain engaged in the pursuit, but United have positioned themselves as frontrunners. The Manchester club's management has committed to substantive discussions with the player's team, determined to outpace their rivals.

Lukeba previously suggested he was content at Leipzig, telling Bild in December—when Bayern interest was particularly acute—that he wanted to restore the club to Champions League football. "In football there are many rumours. I am a young player who wants to gain experience. It's important to keep a cool head," he said at the time.

Having now achieved that objective with Leipzig's Champions League qualification secured, the defender appears ready for his next chapter.
