Man Utd Plot Defensive Overhaul with Three-Man Centre-Back Shortlist

Manchester United are plotting an ambitious summer rebuild, with defensive reinforcement firmly on the agenda as Michael Carrick prepares for his first full campaign in charge.

The club have set aside £150m to bolster their midfield, with three signings targeted in that department following last season's perceived gaps. A left-back and left-winger complete the initial wish-list, though a commanding centre-back sits high among the priorities heading into next season.

Carrick's credentials have been bolstered by an impressive record since taking the reins—ten wins, two draws, and two defeats from his opening 14 matches. Sunday's 3-2 triumph over Liverpool proved decisive, securing Champions League football and the financial firepower that brings.

Spanish reports suggest United have pinpointed an "elite central defender" capable of delivering the physical presence currently lacking at Old Trafford. Three names have emerged as the club's primary targets in what's being dubbed "Operation Wall."

Tottenham's Micky Van de Ven heads the list, with United particularly drawn to his exceptional recovery pace and ability to cover ground—qualities they believe align perfectly with Carrick's tactical blueprint. The Spurs defender has previously attracted interest from the Red Devils.

Nottingham Forest's Murillo represents another option, with the club convinced his competitive edge and tactical discipline would resonate with the Old Trafford faithful. Meanwhile, RB Leipzig's Castello Lukeba appeals to United's hierarchy for his explosiveness and technical ability in transitional moments, with the French defender viewed as potentially the final piece of the puzzle.

Gary Neville has backed the club's thinking on priorities. Speaking to Sky Sports, the United legend stated: "Manchester United need a left-back for next season because Luke Shaw has played every game this season, and I think he may struggle. They need a centre-back, 100 per cent. And they need two central midfield players. They're the four priorities right now."

Neville suggested a potential fifth signing could be considered if United could trade Mason Mount for a more versatile operator, but emphasised that all four primary targets must be top-tier acquisitions.
