Keane Tempers Carrick Euphoria After City Masterclass: "Everyone Just Calm Down"

Roy Keane has delivered a sharp reality check to those getting carried away with Michael Carrick's prospects of landing the Manchester United job permanently, even after the interim manager orchestrated one of his side's finest performances this season against Manchester City.

United's temporary boss has been tasked with steering the club towards Champions League qualification before summer arrives, though a more established figure is expected to take the reins next term. That said, Carrick did little to harm his case with a commanding 2-0 victory at Old Trafford on Saturday—a result that prompted some pundits to reconsider whether he might actually be the man for the job.

Daniel Sturridge, the former Liverpool and Manchester City forward, was among those suggesting Carrick shouldn't be ruled out for the full-time position. When asked why United needed to look elsewhere, Sturridge posed the question directly. Keane, however, wasn't having it.

"He's only been there for three days," Keane countered. "It was the dream scenario for him. Everyone's available. You've got Manchester City at home, who have been a little off. You could have had a man sent off – timing and a little bit of luck, they've made the most of it."

While acknowledging Carrick's display merited praise, Keane urged perspective. "I'm taking nothing away from him. I'm happy to give credit where it's due. And fantastic today. But everyone just calm down," he said.

When Sturridge protested his own composure, Keane doubled down with characteristic bluntness: "Calm down even more. You're saying, give him the job!"

The conversation shifted when Keane was forced to offer rare commendation to captain Bruno Fernandes, whose orchestration proved instrumental in United's opening goal—the assist going to Bryan Mbeumo. For a player of Keane's exacting standards, the praise was notably generous.

"If you want one player in the world to be in this position it's Bruno. It's always Bruno," Keane reflected on the goal. "He's going to make the right decision, the right pace of pass, he's got options but you've got to pick the right one and Bruno's the man for that. The weight of pass, fantastic goal from Manchester United. It was brilliant, effective, attacking football from United – it summed up their performance."
