Gordon's Newcastle Future in Doubt if Champions League Slip-Up Looms, Claims Transfer Expert

Anthony Gordon's future at Newcastle United could hinge on whether Eddie Howe's side secure Champions League football for next season, according to transfer specialist Ben Jacobs.

The 24-year-old winger has been repeatedly linked with a move to Manchester United, and Jacobs believes the Red Devils' prospects of landing Gordon improve significantly if Newcastle fail to close the eight-point gap currently separating them from Chelsea in fifth place.

Gordon's recent form has been nothing short of spectacular, particularly in European competition. He notched four goals during Newcastle's Champions League play-off first leg against Qarabag on Wednesday, extending his season tally to 14 across all competitions. However, his Premier League return stands at just three goals—a statistic that has invited scrutiny from some observers, despite his status as Thomas Tuchel's preferred left-wing option for the England national team.

"Anthony Gordon has been discussed by Manchester United on numerous occasions," Jacobs told The United Stand. "Other clubs, including Arsenal, have also expressed interest. From Newcastle's standpoint, a significant departure could materialise, particularly if they don't secure substantial Champions League revenue."

The situation presents a financial crossroads for Newcastle. Should they qualify for Europe's premier club competition, their ability to retain Gordon strengthens considerably. Conversely, a failure to qualify could force the Magpies into selling either Gordon or another high-profile asset to meet Financial Sustainability Regulations requirements.

Jacobs noted that Liverpool came close to signing Gordon two summers ago when Newcastle faced more pressing PSR concerns. However, he stopped short of predicting a mass exodus, suggesting Newcastle are unlikely to lose more than one marquee player.

When quizzed about the transfer speculation following Wednesday's match, Gordon remained dismissive of the constant chatter surrounding his name. "It's the same old story," he said. "I haven't heard anything—they might want to tell me before telling the media. I've been through enough transfer nonsense to know it's largely rubbish. I'm focused on myself, the team, and the present moment. Looking too far ahead leads to underperformance, and I've learned that lesson before."

Newcastle have valued Gordon at £95 million, a figure that would represent a significant investment for any interested party.

In separate recruitment news, United's head of recruitment Christopher Vivell has proposed Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde to the club's hierarchy. However, Jacobs revealed that Balde remains committed to the La Liga side and that no substantive discussions have taken place between the parties at this stage.
