Iraola emerges as leading contender as United weigh up Carrick's future

Michael Carrick's grip on the Manchester United hot seat has tightened considerably, yet the club's hierarchy continues to cast an eye elsewhere. Andoni Iraola has emerged as the 'strongest candidate' to rival the interim manager for the permanent position at Old Trafford, according to reports.

Since taking over following Ruben Amorim's sacking in January, Carrick has compiled an impressive record of nine wins and just two defeats across 13 matches. That run has effectively secured Champions League football for the club, leaving Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS with a thorny decision.

Despite Carrick's obvious credentials, the United hierarchy are said to prefer a more commanding managerial figure. Gary Neville publicly mused on whether his former teammate might depart voluntarily before suggesting Julian Nagelsmann as a potential successor, but it's the Bournemouth boss who appears to be emerging as the most credible external option.

The Iraola Appeal

United's decision-makers are 'strongly admiring' of the 43-year-old's profile, with particular enthusiasm for his coaching methods and attacking football philosophy. There's a genuine sense within the club that his approach aligns neatly with their current strategic direction.

Tellingly, the Telegraph has reported that while it 'would still be a surprise if Carrick is not eventually given the position', United remain 'wary of repeating 2019 when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was promoted from temporary to permanent' – a cautionary tale that's clearly weighing on minds.

Iraola will become a free agent when his Bournemouth contract expires this summer, making him an attractive proposition. However, a significant complication looms: he's reportedly attracted to the prospect of living in London, and Chelsea have already made an approach to test his interest in a move to Stamford Bridge.

Competition Mounting

The Blues are assembling their own shortlist, which includes Fulham's Marco Silva and Real Madrid's recently departed Xabi Alonso. Crystal Palace are also in the hunt, searching for an Oliver Glasner replacement.

While Iraola is keen to remain in the Premier League, he's open to exploring opportunities elsewhere in Europe or even international management, according to reports.

Former United defender Paul Parker has backed the Spaniard as the ideal alternative should the club opt against promoting Carrick. "If I were to pick another manager other than Carrick, my pick would be Andoni Iraola," Parker said. "He is the one I like the most. He knows the Premier League and he knows how to structure a team. He has improved Bournemouth and their players. I would go for him if they don't choose Carrick."
