Inzaghi Turns Down Man Utd Approach as Club Hunts Interim Manager

Manchester United have already been rebuffed in their search for a new permanent manager, with Simone Inzaghi declining to pursue a move to Old Trafford.

The club dispensed with Ruben Amorim's services on Monday as INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe chart a fresh course for the Premier League side. The Portuguese tactician's tenure unravelled amid disagreements with Jason Wilcox and the wider hierarchy regarding formation choices, tactical philosophy, and the club's approach to the January transfer window—issues compounded by his failure to arrest the team's decline since replacing Erik ten Hag last November.

With Darren Fletcher assuming caretaker duties for the immediate fixtures, United intend to recruit an interim boss through to the season's close before settling on a permanent appointment come summer. Oliver Glasner has attracted particular interest, whilst names including Xavi, Julian Nagelsmann, Thomas Tuchel, Kieran McKenna and Enzo Maresca have all been mooted.

However, United's approach to the former Inter Milan boss has already met with a firm rejection. According to Italian sources, the club sounded out Inzaghi regarding his availability, only to receive a polite but decisive brush-off. The Al-Hilal head coach, born in Piacenza, reportedly stated simply: "No, thanks." His reasoning was straightforward—he intends to remain in Saudi Arabia and see through the project he has recently embarked upon with the club.

His existing two-year contract valued at approximately €50m has presumably played its part in his decision, even accounting for the substantial wages on offer in the Premier League.

The focus has now shifted to interim arrangements, with transfer correspondent Fabrizio Romano reporting that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer stands as the frontrunner. Discussions between Solskjaer's representatives and the club are progressing positively, with the Norwegian having signalled his willingness to take on the role without quibbling over contract terms, salary or timing. His position is straightforward: he wants to help Manchester United through this turbulent period.

According to Romano, United have also internally discussed Michael Carrick and Ruud van Nistelrooy as alternatives, both possessing intimate knowledge of the club's operations. For now, though, Solskjaer remains the preferred choice.

Fletcher will continue in his current capacity for upcoming matches, with Jonny Evans also returning to bolster the coaching setup during this period of instability.
