Red Devils Cast Wide Net in Midfield Hunt as Early Targets Slip Away

Manchester United's summer recruitment drive has hit the skids. What promised to be a blockbuster window following Champions League qualification has become a lesson in financial frustration, with the club's midfield shopping list gathering dust.

The Red Devils landed Ederson early, but subsequent attempts to bolster the engine room have stalled spectacularly. INEOS turned their nose up at Nottingham Forest's £116m asking price for Elliot Anderson, only to watch Manchester City snap him up without hesitation. West Ham's £85m valuation of Mateus Fernandes proved equally prohibitive, yet Tottenham had no such qualms about breaking their transfer record. And now Sandro Tonali is heading to north London for £100m – £92.5m plus £7.5m in add-ons – leaving United to dust off plans D, E, and F.

According to the Daily Mail's Chris Wheeler, a reporter with deep connections at Old Trafford, six names have emerged as potential alternatives: Aurelien Tchouameni, Carlos Baleba, Adam Wharton, Felix Nmecha, Tyler Adams and Alex Scott.

Of this half-dozen, Bournemouth's Scott appears likeliest to attract immediate attention. The 22-year-old is known to appeal to United's hierarchy, and the club may well turn to him next as they reassess following the Fernandes disappointment. Arsenal stand as the principal rival for his signature, though City, Chelsea and Tottenham have all registered their interest.

Don't expect a done deal anytime soon, though. Bournemouth have made clear they're not entertaining offers. The club intend to improve his contract, which currently runs until 2028. While Scott might have cost around £60m previously, the fees splashed on Anderson and Fernandes have emboldened the Cherries to demand considerably more.

Tchouameni remains high on the wish list, yet his situation at Real Madrid remains uncertain following Jose Mourinho's appointment as coach. Even if the Frenchman were available, the financial hurdles that have dogged United's window – both fee and wages – would likely resurface.

Dortmund's Felix Nmecha and Bournemouth's Tyler Adams represent other possibilities, though neither has generated the intensity of earlier targets. Interestingly, United's enthusiasm for Tonali cooled markedly before Tottenham accelerated their pursuit. Baleba and Wharton have barely featured in serious discussions this summer.

The mixed response from the fanbase tells its own story. Some supporters question whether United made the right call standing firm on valuations, particularly after Ederson's arrival failed to convince everyone. Others have backed the club's refusal to be held to ransom, even as silverware slips through their fingers.
