Man Utd Slam Door on Ugarte Galatasaray Loan as Amorim Draws Line in Transfer Sand

Manchester United have made their position crystal clear: Manuel Ugarte is going nowhere in January, at least not on Galatasaray's terms.

The Turkish outfit came knocking with what looked like a decent proposition—a loan deal worth around £15million in fees, complete with a purchase option attached. United promptly showed them the door. The Red Devils' reasoning? With Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee both eyeing January exits, keeping Ugarte is non-negotiable for now.

That said, there remains a glimmer of daylight. Should Galatasaray return with a permanent offer hovering near the £45million United originally handed PSG in August 2024, the conversation might shift. For now though, they're holding firm.

The £50million summer signing from PSG has cut a frustrating figure since arriving at Old Trafford. Reuniting with Ruben Amorim—the pair worked together at Sporting Lisbon—was supposed to spark a revival. Instead, Ugarte has proven limited in possession and found himself behind Casemiro in the pecking order, hardly the trajectory United envisioned when they sanctioned his move.

Amorim himself has already laid down the law on the transfer front. Speaking this week, the manager insisted the window would bring no squad alterations.

"The transfer window is not going to change," he said. "We have no conversations at this moment to have any change in the squad. There's a process, there's an idea that is going to continue. We are near the places of the Champions League, but we are also near like eight teams behind us. So let's focus on the next game, just that. Our focus is to win the next game."

That message—both the public version and the private one—has been hammered home to INEOS, according to transfer analyst Fabrizio Romano. The manager's stance is unambiguous: any player departing Old Trafford in January must have a replacement lined up immediately.

"If any player leaves Manchester United in the January transfer window, there must be a replacement," Romano explained. "No one will leave without a replacement coming in. This message has been communicated publicly and privately."

The AFCON tournament further complicates matters, making it nigh-on impossible for United to let anyone depart without having adequate cover already in place. That's why Mainoo and Zirkzee, despite their apparent desire to move, remain stuck in limbo unless solutions materialise.

So Ugarte stays put for now—another expensive disappointment gathering dust on United's books.
