Manchester United Cool on Sandro Tonali as Newcastle Midfielder's Price Tag Proves a Dealbreaker

Michael Carrick has settled into his role as Manchester United's permanent manager following his impressive interim spell that secured Champions League football, but his summer recruitment plans are already hitting snags.

The Red Devils are pumping the brakes on a move for Newcastle's Sandro Tonali, Carrick's midfield preference, after concluding the Italy international carries too hefty a price tag for comfort. While the club's hierarchy—including Jason Wilcox and Omar Berrada of INEOS—had identified Elliot Anderson of Nottingham Forest as their primary target, that avenue appears to be closing after the Forest midfielder agreed terms in principle with Manchester City.

The Tonali situation presents a different headache entirely. Fabrizio Romano reported that United have been conducting business in Italy and genuinely admire the 24-year-old, but a significant gap remains between what Newcastle want and what Old Trafford are prepared to spend. Di Marzio suggested United felt confident of landing Tonali for around €100 million (£86m), yet Newcastle are holding firm at no less than €115 million (£100m). Factor in reports of substantial salary demands from Tonali's camp, and the arithmetic simply doesn't stack up.

"Manchester United believe Tonali at the moment is really expensive, so at the moment the price remains the problem," Romano explained. "But the appreciation from Man Utd for Tonali is clear."

The club's frustration is understandable—they're being asked to break the bank for a player who, while talented, represents questionable value in the current market.

There is at least one bright spot in United's transfer window. Discussions with Atalanta over Brazilian midfielder Ederson have reached an advanced stage, with United's €45 million verbal offer sitting comfortably within the Serie A club's asking price of €45-50 million. The three-cap Brazil international has made his preference abundantly clear, informing United of his total priority and signalling his eagerness to move. Despite another unnamed suitor circling, Ederson has eyes only for Old Trafford, and a deal appears increasingly likely to materialise.
