United Growing Confident on Baleba Swoop as January Transfers Ruled Out

Manchester United are building confidence in their pursuit of Brighton's Carlos Baleba, with the 22-year-old central midfielder firmly back on the radar as the club prepares for a major midfield rebuild.

The Red Devils' interest in Baleba dates back to last summer, when they found themselves priced out of a move for one of Europe's most promising young midfielders. A £100m fee proved prohibitive at the time, particularly after United had already committed around £230m to the transfer market and failed to move Bruno Fernandes on.

Baleba has since become established as a potential long-term successor to Casemiro in United's engine room, though his profile has shifted somewhat since the initial interest. According to reports, the Brighton star remains contracted until 2028, but his stock has dipped since United first came calling.

The situation has changed enough that United now believe they can get the deal done this summer. Sources indicate the club is "becoming more optimistic about prising Baleba away from the Amex," with the midfielder high on their list of targets alongside Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson and Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton.

No January Business Planned

Any midfield reconstruction, however, will have to wait. United have made their January position clear: no signings are forthcoming this month. The decision follows Michael Carrick's appointment as head coach, with the club sticking rigidly to their long-term strategy.

Two factors explain the hands-off approach. First, United's priority targets simply aren't available during the winter window. Second, and perhaps more crucially, the club views summer as the optimal time to land top-quality recruits at value-for-money fees. That philosophy was reinforced by their summer business, when they invested £215m to bring in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko, Senne Lammens, and Diego Leon.

A significant reshuffle of the midfield ranks is anticipated in the coming months, with Manuel Ugarte, Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo, and Bruno Fernandes all potentially heading for the exit. When summer arrives, Baleba could finally get his move to Old Trafford.
