United in Greenwood talks as buy-back clause emerges; Fernandes set for fresh contract discussions

Manchester United are exploring the possibility of re-signing Mason Greenwood, according to fresh reports, with the club having retained a buy-back clause when they parted ways with the winger in 2024.

The 24-year-old academy product was forced out of Old Trafford following serious charges, though the Crown Prosecution Service eventually discontinued proceedings after key witnesses withdrew. The decision prompted United to conduct an internal investigation, ultimately deeming his continued presence a reputational risk. Greenwood spent the 2023 summer on loan at Getafe before securing a permanent move to Marseille for approximately £26m.

Since joining the Ligue 1 outfit, Greenwood has flourished spectacularly. Over 18 months and 63 appearances, he has accumulated 42 goals and 12 assists, attracting interest from several European heavyweights including Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. The former United prospect remains contracted to Marseille with suitors circling.

When United sold Greenwood, they negotiated protective measures for themselves. Alongside a 50% sell-on clause, the club secured a buy-back option allowing them to re-sign the winger at below current market value. Should either Barcelona or Atlético complete a transfer, United would pocket over £25m through their sell-on arrangement alone.

Football Insider now reports that United officials have internally discussed activating that buy-back clause. Club executives have apparently assessed the feasibility of bringing Greenwood back to Old Trafford, though such a move would likely trigger significant backlash given the circumstances of his departure.

Meanwhile, United have turned their attention to contract negotiations with captain Bruno Fernandes. The midfielder has been persistently linked with a Saudi Pro League switch, having come close to joining Al Hilal last summer. However, ESPN reports that club leadership intends to convince Fernandes to commit to at least another season, with discussions planned around the World Cup period.

United hierarchy views retaining Fernandes as crucial during another transitional summer, with a permanent manager poised to replace Ruben Amorim. The club's strategy suggests they are prioritising stability at the helm before pursuing significant midfield reinforcements, with at least two new midfielders targeted for the summer window.
