Al-Hilal's £104m Greenwood Swoop Could Land Man Utd a Tidy £52m Windfall

Manchester United stand to pocket a significant sum should Mason Greenwood's rumoured move to Saudi Arabia materialise, with Al-Hilal reportedly preparing a €120m (£104m) package for the 24-year-old winger.

The Red Devils' financial interest stems from the sell-on clause they negotiated when Greenwood departed Old Trafford in summer 2024. Having retained a 50 per cent stake in any future transfer fee, United would bank approximately £52m should the Saudi club's reported offer translate into a completed deal.

Greenwood's journey back to the pitch has been a lengthy one. Suspended by United in January 2022 following serious allegations, he faced charges including attempted rape and assault before the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued proceedings in February 2023. The forward eventually sealed his exit from Old Trafford when Marseille snapped him up for €31.6m.

Since touching down in France, the academy product has flourished considerably. Last season proved particularly productive, with 21 goals and five assists across 34 Ligue Un outings. The current campaign has seen him maintain that trajectory, notching 21 goals and eight assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.

His resurgence hasn't gone unnoticed. Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano recently outlined the competitive landscape forming around Greenwood's signature. Fenerbahce's presidential candidate Hakan Safi announced earlier this week that a four-year agreement had been struck with the player, though no deal with Marseille has been finalised. Safi declared: "We have signed a four-year agreement with Mason Greenwood. He has proven himself at the highest level of European football. He has agreed to join Fenerbahçe during the most valuable and productive years of his career. I said I would bring a star player. Today, I am experiencing the justified pride of keeping my promise."

Yet complications remain. Romano stressed that player agreements don't guarantee transfers, with Marseille demanding €55m plus €5m in add-ons as their asking price. The situation remains fluid, with Roma also circling. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini harbours genuine admiration for Greenwood's talents and could yet make a move should Fenerbahce's pursuit falter.

The Al-Hilal interest adds another dimension to what's shaping up as a fascinating transfer saga, one that could prove particularly rewarding for United's coffers come summer's end.
