United Pump the Brakes on Carrick as Iraola Becomes Available Option

Manchester United appear to have shelved their immediate plans to offer Michael Carrick a permanent deal at the helm, following confirmation that Andoni Iraola will be available on the market come June.

The interim boss has impressed since taking the reins in January, steering the club to seven wins, two draws and two defeats from his opening 11 matches. That run has left United well-positioned to secure Champions League football for next season—the stated objective for whoever occupies the dugout long-term.

Yet the prospect of Iraola becoming a free agent has seemingly altered United's calculations. Reports suggest the club was edging towards making Carrick's temporary appointment permanent, with Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann also having attracted interest. However, the combination of Iraola's availability and Monday's defeat to Leeds has prompted a rethink.

Iraola's departure from Bournemouth was announced this week, with the club confirming his contract will expire at the season's end. Marco Rose, the former Borussia Dortmund chief, and Kieran McKenna of Ipswich Town are understood to be leading candidates to replace him on the south coast.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Iraola would welcome the opportunity to manage United. "If you ask me whether Andoni Iraola would like to be Manchester United manager, I'm told he would be open to that for sure," Romano stated. "But at the moment, nothing more than this."

However, Romano added that no formal negotiations are underway, whilst reaffirming United's satisfaction with Carrick's work. "The feeling remains really positive around Michael Carrick," he explained. "They are very happy with him—his attitude, tactical decisions, his approach, and the relationship he has with the players."

Should Iraola make the move to Old Trafford, there's speculation that some of his Bournemouth squad could follow. United are reportedly keeping tabs on striker Junior Kroupi and defender Marcos Senesi ahead of what could prove a significant summer overhaul at the Vitality Stadium.

Bournemouth chairman Bill Foley paid tribute to Iraola's three-year tenure, praising his contribution to elevating the club "both on and off the pitch," whilst head of football operations Tiago Pinto highlighted the Spaniard's "tactical intelligence" and ability to develop players.

The decision on United's permanent managerial appointment will be made between now and the end of the season, with Champions League qualification remaining the benchmark for success under Carrick's stewardship.
