Real Madrid have pulled the trigger on Xabi Alonso, ending his tenure at the Bernabéu by mutual consent just days after Sunday's Super Cup loss to Barcelona. The club has swiftly installed Álvaro Arbeloa, another former Liverpool figure, as his replacement.

Despite an impressive record of 20 wins from 29 matches in charge, Alonso's time at Los Blancos has come to an abrupt end. The Spanish tactician has long been the favourite to eventually take over at Anfield and was previously considered as Jurgen Klopp's successor at the end of 2023/24 before opting to remain in Germany for another season before his Madrid move.

Yet Manchester United could yet throw their hat into the ring. According to reports from a group of elite reporters, the club's decision-makers are now monitoring the situation closely but will require persuasion from director of football Jason Wilcox to pursue the 44-year-old.

For United, the logic appears straightforward. Alonso represents an elite-level appointment capable of reviving a club desperate to reclaim its former standing. His availability eliminates the need for an interim arrangement, even with Michael Carrick currently holding the fort. A manager of his calibre, suddenly free from one of world football's biggest jobs, doesn't arrive at Old Trafford's door often.

Liverpool's pull remains considerable, however. Alonso's deep connections to Merseyside, combined with Slot's precarious position, make a move to Anfield feel almost inevitable. The former Bayer Leverkusen boss could simply wait for that opportunity to materialise.
