Manchester United are preparing for a summer of considerable activity in the transfer market as they prepare for their Champions League return, with midfield overhaul emerging as the priority.

Michael Carrick's impressive work during the 2025/26 run-in has stabilised the club, but strengthening across multiple positions remains essential before juggling European football alongside domestic commitments.

Having addressed their striker and goalkeeper positions last year, the Red Devils have zeroed in on midfield recruitment. The departure of Casemiro leaves a significant void, and United require at least two replacements in that department.

Atalanta's Ederson Silva, valued at £38m, is expected to arrive as the first signing, barring any unforeseen complications. Beyond the Brazilian midfielder, sources indicate United are pursuing three additional midfield targets.

West Ham's Mateus Fernandes has emerged as a potential option, with the Hammers' Championship relegation likely to trigger an exit. Nottingham Forest's Anderson remains on the radar despite Manchester City's apparent advantage in that particular race, though his £120m valuation presents a stumbling block. Newcastle's Sandro Tonali and Brighton's Carlos Baleba round out the shortlist.

Real Madrid's Aurelien Tchouameni has also attracted United's attention. Fabrizio Romano outlined the complications: the Spanish giants remain committed to keeping their midfielder, whilst his substantial wage packet poses another hurdle. Nevertheless, Romano noted United believe Tchouameni possesses the ideal profile to replace Casemiro—a top-tier international capable of both defensive solidity and goal contribution.

Seven Exits to Fund the Spending Spree

United enter the window with a £200m budget, though departures will inflate that figure considerably. The free transfers of Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia have already eased the wage burden, with five further exits anticipated.

Marcus Rashford's future remains uncertain following his Barcelona loan spell, with United reportedly keen to move him on permanently. The goalkeeping department is also facing upheaval, with Altay Bayindir and Andre Onana both potentially heading for the exit. Additionally, the club are open to entertaining offers for midfielder Manuel Ugarte and forward Joshua Zirkzee.

These departures would represent a significant squad refresh as Carrick's side prepare for the demands of European football alongside their domestic campaign.
