Manchester United Dispatch Andre Onana on Second Loan Spell to Turkey

It's hardly the stuff of transfer legend, but Manchester United have at least salvaged something from the Andre Onana debacle by shipping the goalkeeper back out to Turkey for a second consecutive loan spell.

The £47.2m purchase from Inter Milan in 2023 has become something of a punchline at Old Trafford, his catalogue of goalkeeping howlers making him a genuine contender for the club's worst-ever signing conversation. When you're in the frame alongside Jadon Sancho, Antony, and even Alexis Sanchez, you know things have gone spectacularly wrong.

Onana's first stint at Trabzonspor last season was meant to either rehabilitate his reputation or convince the Turkish outfit to make the move permanent. Neither happened. There was no purchase option written into that initial loan agreement, leaving United in limbo.

Now, though, they've managed to secure another 12 months away, and this time they're at least getting something out of the arrangement. According to reports from Ben Jacobs and Fabrizio Romano, the deal includes a fee of up to £1.3m based on performance metrics, with Trabzonspor footing the majority of Onana's wages. There remains no option or obligation to buy.

"One year loan for fee up to £1.3m based on performances, NO buy option or obligation to buy," Romano confirmed. "Onana will be back to #MUFC in one year. Trabzonspor will cover majority of wages."

It's a decent bit of housekeeping, then. While a permanent exit would have been the dream, United are at least recouping some cash and avoiding the bulk of his salary commitments for another season.

The goalkeeper's prospects of redemption at Old Trafford look decidedly bleak anyway. Senne Lammens has arrived and made an immediate impact, earning Premier League signing of the season honours and rendering any Onana resurrection narrative entirely academic. When Onana returns in summer 2027, he'll have just one year remaining on his Manchester contract – hardly the platform from which to stage a comeback.

Reports suggested Onana harboured hopes of proving himself once the first loan ended, but the emergence of a genuine talent in goal has rendered that point moot. United have moved on, and so, it seems, must he.
