Fernandes Rules Out Saudi Switch; Sheringham Questions Captain's Leadership

Manchester United's captain Bruno Fernandes has drawn a line under speculation surrounding a potential switch to the Saudi Pro League, signalling his intention to remain in elite European football for now.

The Portuguese midfielder has been the subject of persistent transfer chatter, with the Reds reportedly considering cashing in on their star performer last summer to fund a wider squad overhaul. Al-Hilal emerged as a serious option at that juncture, yet Fernandes ultimately chose to stay put—though not before hinting at frustrations with how the club's board has handled his situation.

Fresh rumours have since linked the 30-year-old with moves to both Saudi Arabia and Bayern Munich, particularly following his impressive displays during Michael Carrick's opening fortnight as interim manager. But according to Football Insider, Fernandes has now made his position abundantly clear: a lucrative Saudi switch holds no appeal.

"I think he can definitely stay beyond this summer. He's under contract until 2027, and there's an option in that deal, as well, to extend it," Football Insider journalist Pete O'Rourke explained. "If he was to become available, there's no doubt that there would be clubs interested in him. We know that obviously there has been interest from the Saudi Pro League before, but I'm not sure that Fernandes is ready to move there at this stage of his career. He still wants to play at the highest level."

While Fernandes' commitment appears settled for now, club legend Teddy Sheringham has voiced concerns about the captain's temperament and leadership credentials. Despite acknowledging that losing Fernandes would represent a significant blow to United's prospects, Sheringham questioned whether the midfielder embodies the values expected of an Old Trafford captain.

"You're looking at him as captain material and whether he's an identity which is what the club stands for. I don't think he's that because he doesn't lead by example in his manner on the pitch," Sheringham told Bet MGM. "We've seen him throw his arms up in the air and all that which I don't think is a good look and not something a captain should be doing."

The former striker acknowledged Fernandes' exceptional performances over the past two-and-a-half years, particularly given the struggles of his teammates. "There's been a lot of speculation about his future. First of all, you don't want to lose your top players and without a doubt, Bruno has been one of Manchester United's top performers over the last two-and-a-half years in a team full of players who have been underperforming," Sheringham continued. "He'd be a huge loss if he did move on at the end of the season."
