Fernandes Could Still Walk Away If United Fails to Convince Him, Romano Warns

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has suggested that Bruno Fernandes holds the key to his Manchester United future—and the Portuguese captain could yet walk away if the Red Devils fail to meet his expectations on ambition.

Since the summer of 2023, Fernandes has fielded serious overtures from Saudi Arabia's elite clubs on an annual basis. Most notably, Al-Hilal tabled substantial proposals last summer, but the midfielder chose to remain at Old Trafford. A potential £100m exit had been contemplated by United's board as a means to bankroll a squad overhaul, yet Fernandes ultimately stayed put.

The mood surrounding the 30-year-old has shifted considerably. Michael Carrick's interim stewardship has rejuvenated Old Trafford, with the caretaker boss securing six victories and a draw from his opening seven matches. That resurgence has lifted the gloom that descended during Ruben Amorim's underwhelming 14-month tenure, which ended in January.

Romano revealed on his YouTube channel that while current sentiment around Fernandes remains "very positive," the Saudi Pro League's big-hitters will surely come knocking again when the transfer window reopens.

"The top Saudi clubs remain interested because he has always been a priority target," Romano explained. "When they identify a player as a key objective, that interest does not disappear."

The crucial factor, however, rests entirely with Fernandes himself. Romano stressed that financial terms would present no obstacle to any potential agreement with United, nor would a salary increase tempt the captain away—he's already turned down vastly superior wages from Middle Eastern suitors.

"It is not about money," Romano stated. "If Bruno had wanted a higher wage, he already had the opportunity to earn significantly more than he does at Man Utd. He stayed because he wants to win at the club, because he wants to help the club and because, as captain, he feels he can do something important."

The deciding factor, then, hinges on whether United can convince Fernandes that their ambitions align with his own. Only a failure to demonstrate sufficient drive and investment could tempt him elsewhere.

That commitment will be tested over the coming months. The club hierarchy remain undecided on Amorim's permanent successor, with significant squad changes anticipated for the summer window. United's ability to attract top talent and chart a convincing course forward may well determine whether they retain their talismanic midfielder.

Fernandes, meanwhile, continues to perform at an elite level. Over the weekend, he became only the third player in United's history—after Ryan Giggs and Wayne Rooney—to reach the century mark in both goals and assists for the club. His record speaks volumes about his quality and commitment, but as Romano concluded, the final say rests with the man himself.
