Tottenham appear to have shifted the balance in their favour over Manchester United for the signature of West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, with the player seemingly keen on a move to the Lilywhites this summer.

Following an impressive campaign at the Hammers despite their Championship relegation, Fernandes has caught the eye of several heavyweight suitors. United, Spurs, and Real Madrid have all circled, though none have tabled a formal bid to West Ham as yet.

The Red Devils looked set to land their man until Tottenham signalled serious intent. Transfer correspondent Nicolo Schira reported that Spurs are prepared to splash £70m on the West Ham star, with both United and the Spanish giants still very much in contention.

Fabrizio Romano subsequently offered a more nuanced picture, suggesting Tottenham were actively engaging Jorge Mendes, Fernandes' agent, in negotiations. However, Romano stressed that nothing was settled, emphasising that United remained hard at work on both the club and player fronts. "Manchester United are still very much in the picture," Romano stated on his YouTube channel.

By Tuesday, though, Schira's latest dispatch indicated momentum had shifted decisively towards Tottenham. The journalist claimed Spurs had now edged past United in the pursuit, with Fernandes having signalled his readiness to commit to a deal running until 2031, plus an option for a further year. Tottenham are now in direct talks with West Ham, according to Schira's reporting.

Madrid Exit as Fernandes Eyes Spurs

The plot thickened when Spanish outlet AS reported that Real Madrid had effectively walked away from the race. The midfielder's stated preference for Tottenham proved the decisive factor in their withdrawal. Madrid have instead pivoted their attention towards Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez, seeking to bolster their midfield elsewhere.

United, meanwhile, face a substantial asking price. Gary Neville suggested that West Ham's valuation of Fernandes at £100m means his former club may need to cast their net wider. The ex-defender, speaking on ITV Sport, reckoned Germany international Felix Nmecha could represent better value were United to abandon their pursuit. "The more he plays like he did the other night the more expensive he'll get," Neville observed, noting that Fernandes "looked outstanding" and "had absolutely everything" in recent appearances.
