Fernandes has been the subject of persistent exit chatter since the summer, when INEOS reportedly attempted to ship him out to Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal to fund their Old Trafford overhaul. The 31-year-old stayed put, though, and has impressed under interim boss Michael Carrick in United's opening matches. Still, cashing in remains very much on the table come the next transfer window.

The United captain's current deal runs through 2027 with an extension option attached, but that expiring summer of 2027 makes him precisely the sort of "unbeatable market opportunity" Real Madrid love to exploit. The England international's attitude issues have allegedly prompted the Spanish club to consider his sale, and Fernandes' arrival would apparently grease the wheels for that exit. Fernandes has previously dismissed Saudi Arabia as a destination, insisting he remains focused on playing at the absolute highest level. Real Madrid certainly qualifies on that front.
