Ferdinand Makes Case for Anderson as Mainoo's Ideal Midfield Partner

Rio Ferdinand has thrown his weight behind a bold midfield recruitment strategy for Manchester United, singling out Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson as the ideal running mate for Kobbie Mainoo.

The United legend's endorsement comes at a pivotal moment for the club. Michael Carrick's interim tenure has yielded impressive results—seven victories, two draws and a solitary defeat across his first ten matches—putting the Red Devils firmly on course for Champions League football next season. That silverware in the trophy cabinet would provide crucial financial firepower for what promises to be an ambitious summer rebuild.

With Casemiro announcing his departure, United face a significant midfield overhaul. Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are plotting an overhaul that could see at least two new midfielders arrive, alongside a left-back and left-winger. Whilst Mainoo and Casemiro have forged an effective partnership under Carrick, the Argentine's exit necessitates fresh thinking.

Several names have circulated, but Ferdinand reckons the Forest man stands apart from the alternatives. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he dismissed comparisons with Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali, emphasising youth as a decisive factor. "Elliot Anderson. His age, he's 23 years old… Guimaraes is 28 and Tonali is 25, soon to be 26, so that counts for a lot for me. I want young, hungry players in my squad," Ferdinand explained.

The case for Anderson extends beyond mere age, however. Ferdinand highlighted a particular skill set that would complement Mainoo's qualities. "He complements Mainoo. I think Mainoo is going to be one of the main players in the team now, they're going to build around him and I think Elliot Anderson absolutely complements him. They're different. Anderson has that ability, that energy to get around the park, he's aggressive. We need those legs."

Anderson's ball-winning prowess appears central to Ferdinand's reasoning. "And he wins the ball. He's more combative than the other two," the former defender continued, before citing eye-catching statistics. "Elliot Anderson is the only player to win over 150 duels, win possession more than 150 times, and win at least 50 fouls in the Premier League, the whole Premier League I must add, this season."

The Forest club are reportedly holding firm on a valuation between £100 and £120 million. Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has indicated that Nottingham Forest anticipate United joining the race for Anderson's signature, though Manchester City have also registered interest—albeit with their immediate focus directed toward securing Rodri's contract extension. As matters stand, no club has initiated formal discussions with Forest.
