Evra Backs Carrick But Undermines Own Case by Naming Luis Enrique as 'Dream' Manager

Patrice Evra has found himself talking out of both sides of his mouth regarding Manchester United's managerial situation, championing Michael Carrick's credentials while simultaneously floating Luis Enrique as the "dream" alternative.

The United legend previously launched into critics—including Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, and Roy Keane—for their scepticism of Carrick following the disappointing defeat to 10-man Newcastle. Yet Evra's latest intervention rather undermines his own defence of the interim manager by essentially admitting he'd prefer someone else.

Carrick arrived as a short-term stopgap when replacing Ruben Amorim, but his recent work has substantially enhanced United's Champions League qualification prospects and bolstered his case for the permanent role. Evra acknowledges this progress, but his endorsement rings hollow when he's simultaneously championing the PSG boss.

"Luis Enrique would be a dream coach for Man United," Evra told Stake, before attempting to square the circle. "I love his philosophy, what he's overcome personally shows his character. The job he's done at PSG—bringing them Champions League success without Messi, Mbappé or Neymar—that's fantastic work."

Evra suggested Enrique's demanding approach would suit United's needs. "Players would have to work really hard, they'd have to run constantly, and I think Enrique brings that intensity," he explained.

Yet in the same breath, Evra insisted Carrick deserves his opportunity. "Right now, we need someone who understands the club and the players. Carrick's done a great job and deserves a chance," he added, before somewhat contradicting himself by describing Enrique as both a "genius tactician" and superior with personnel.

The former left-back also weighed in on Bruno Fernandes' future, suggesting the captain will face considerable temptation to depart Old Trafford. Fernandes nearly left at the season's start before Amorim convinced him to stay, but Evra reckons elite operators like the Portuguese midfielder will always have exit routes available.

"Players of Bruno's calibre can move anywhere and win trophies elsewhere, but he's at United," Evra noted. "His family might be settled in Manchester, he's captain, and he believes in the club's history. Still, he'll have plenty of opportunities in the summer—it's his decision whether he wants to take them."
